2024 Highlights
Sheridan EDGE participated in a conversation with Hon. Rechie Valdez, Minister of Small Business, at the Mississauga Board of Trade Breakfast event to discuss how the federal government is fostering economic growth for small businesses in Mississauga. One of our founders Sharon Bailey was invited to join us and represent the voices of our entrepreneurial community.
Rise was launched with nearly $1.6 million in funding from FedDev Ontario, aimed at helping 200 businesses and leading to the creation of 150 new products and services by 2027.
For the third straight year, Sheridan EDGE organized the Annual ACBN Legacy Symposium with Afro-Caribbean Business Network Foundation Canada (ACBN) and in collaboration with the Pilon School of Business for 100 Black entrepreneurs, community leaders, and professionals.
In celebration of International Women's Day, Sheridan EDGE participated in an event with Hon. Minister Filomena Tassi, MP (Hamilton West—Ancaster—Dundas), Hon. Minister Anita Anand, MP (Oakville), Hon. Minister Karina Gould, MP (Burlington), Adam van Koeverden, MP (Milton), and Pam Damoff, MP (Oakville North—Burlington), to engage with young women entrepreneurs from across the Golden Horseshoe.
To mark Sustainable Development Goals Week, Sheridan EDGE hosted a clothing swap event in collaboration with Campus Thrift, a venture founded by an EDGE alum, engaging over 100 students.
The first EDGE Student Advisory Board was established, bringing together 36 board members and 85 committee members to shape future initiatives.
EDGE Coworking celebrated its first anniversary of providing values-driven entrepreneurs and professionals with a space designed for growth and success.
The first-of-its-kind Business Plan Pitch Contest was hosted in collaboration with the Pilon School of Business, providing aspiring student entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their innovative business ideas and pitch them to a panel of expert judges.
EDGE Student Ambassadors Meghna Rajendra (Business Analysis and Process Management ’23) and Althea Tauro (Project Management ’23) were recognized as Sheridan Co-op Students of the Year (Pilon School of Business), highlighting their exceptional contributions and achievements.
Engaged with hundreds of entrepreneurs in technology and innovation at the DiscoveryX Conference & Trade Show, in collaboration with Generator at Sheridan’s Research Innovation and Entrepreneurship centres, including the Centre for Elder Research (CER), Centre for Intelligent Manufacturing, Centre for Applied AI, and Screen Industries Research & Training Centre (SIRT).
Gurpartap Singh Toor, Regional Councillor for Wards 9 and 10, and Devin Ramphal, Innovation and Technology Sector Manager for the City of Brampton, visited Sheridan EDGE to brainstorm ways to boost small businesses in Brampton and Peel.
The inaugural InnocaS.E competition, held in collaboration with the Sheridan Student Union (SSU) and attended by 85 participants, featured 12 teams presenting innovations to issues like the student housing crisis, immigrant community stress, and time management.
Sheridan EDGE collaborated with BLK Owned's Trailblazer program, an initiative supporting Black early-stage youth entrepreneurs in learning business fundamentals and connecting with like-minded peers and mentors. Five spots in this program were sponsored for Sheridan students, based on the selection of their application.
As community partners at Elevate Festival, Canada’s leading tech and innovation event, Sheridan EDGE hosted two Braindates focused on scaling impact enterprises and building strategic partnerships for social impact and growth.
Sheridan EDGE facilitated a masterclass on Making a Social Impact, delivered as part of IDEA Mississauga’s Summer Company Program. The session included an engaging panel discussion featuring entrepreneurs from the Rise program, who shared their experiences and insights on integrating social impact into their ventures. This collaboration aimed to equip entrepreneurs with practical strategies to build impactful businesses.
The second cohort of Black Founders in Cleantech, a first-of-its-kind certificate, was rolled out in collaboration with Sheridan Continuing and Professional Studies (CAPS) and the Afro-Caribbean Business Network. This certificate represents a significant milestone in promoting diversity and innovation within Canada's clean technology sector.
Thrive, our signature student entrepreneurship program, was launched through a one-day boot camp session attended by over 50 students. Ten aspiring student entrepreneurs were selected to participate in the seven-week training program and build their business ideas into successful ventures.
The 2024 Sauga Startup Pitch and Showcase, Peel Region's flagship startup pitch competition, was hosted at Sheridan in partnership with ICUBE, SpinUp at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), and IDEA Mississauga.
